How to Hang Continuous Cord Loop
How to Shorten the Cord on Your Vertical Blinds
Need for Window Blinds
Window treatments are essential for your homes as they provide the much needed covering between the window and your room. The glass windows can cause loss of energy and allow electricity bills to shoot up. They can compromise the privacy of your homes and expose your vulnerability to the outside world. Windows without adequate treatment can allow too much sunlight to flow into the house and expose it to the damaging effects of UV rays. The latter can not only affect your health but also the flooring, furnishing and interior décor of the house. Window treatments are an indispensable part of your homes.
Danger of Long Corded Blinds
Window blinds are a popular choice of window treatment. They are loaded with richness and goodness and can transform your homes into sun-protected and safe sanctuaries. Blinds are mostly corded, though in recent times cordless blinds have captured much of the market. The blinds use cords for their operation and they are known as lift cords. The cords are like pulleys. Pulling one string will help to raise the blinds while the other string will help lower the cord. These cords, however, tend to most times unnecessarily long. It causes the cords to pool on the ground making a mess and the windows appear too crowded. More than the aesthetics of the rooms, these cords can be extremely hazardous. If you have a toddler or a small kid in the house you will know that they are all over the place. They will crawl to any conceivable place and start exploring as they have a whole new world to explore and learn. This poses a danger if you have corded blinds in the house. The kids start playing with the cords and before you realize you find the kids tangled with the cords. Unknowingly they often have these cords around their necks this can be extremely dangerous as there are chances of the kids getting strangulated and choking to death. There have been reports of fatalities in the past and the blinds are delivered with warning notes to parents.
Not only the toddlers, but even playful pets are also at risk as the cords can get tangled around them causing them to choke.
Replace Blinds or Shorten the Cords
It is because of these reasons that cordless blinds have become popular as they can be controlled with the help of remotes. That said, if you already have corded blinds, it isn't always practical to replace your blinds with cordless ones as it can be an expensive affair. You can simply shorten the length of the cords so that they do not dangle or pool on the floor waiting for a mishap to happen.
To Shorten Traverse Cords
To shorten traverse cords for G85 DuraVue/Duralite and G71 SuperVue/Everglide and for Angle tops and headrails that are curved or bowed follow the steps given below:
1. Decide the length of the traverse cord that is needed.
2. Rotate the louvers open and place a hard plastic card between the louver and the long side of the louver stem. Push the card and the louver up toward the top of the louver stem. This will help displace the louver from the stem.
3. By pulling down on both the louver and the plastic card simultaneously remove the louver. Layout the louver on a clean flat surface. Repeat this step for all louvers.
4. Traverse the carriers to the stacked position.
5. Locate the first carrier closest to the center of the blind on the control side of the headrail.
6. Use needle-nose pliers to grip the knot and pull lightly. As the cord is pulled out through the carriers, the traverse cord loop will shorten.
7. Once you get the desired length of the traverse cord, tie a double knot in the cord.
8. To ensure the cord length is correct, traverse carriers by pulling on the traverse cord several times to test operation and cord length.
9. Once the cord length is correct, and the carriers traverse properly, cut the excess cord ¼" before the new knot. Pull the traverse cord until the knot is snug up against the carrier.
10. If the headrail is functioning properly reinstall the louvers in the open position.
To shorten the length of the traverse cords you need the following tools:
• Flathead screwdriver
• Needle nose pliers or tweezers
• Scissors
To Shorten Normal Blind Cords
To shorten the normal blind cords you can do the following:
1. To ensure that the cords are at their maximum length completely close the blinds.
2. Remove the knot at the end of the tassel and take the tassels off the cords.
3. Decide the length that is comfortable for the blinds to operate. They should neither be too long to pose a danger nor too short such that the blinds don't work at all. Whatever the desired length is add about 1 inch to it and then cut the excess cords off.
4. Tie the tassels back to the cord and make three knots. Include an extra inch of cord under each tassel.
Shortening the length of the cords will help to do away with the threat that they pose to kids and pets and also allow you to continue using the same blinds.
